Training your puppy is sometimes an overwhelming task that new dog owners will find especially frustrating. It’s important to remember that your puppy is essentially a baby, and you have to treat it that way. There will be accidents and moments where your puppy acts out, but there will be moments where your puppy will make you laugh at loud and feel full of love and joy. Those are the moments to remember and hold on to when training your puppy. Here are a few tips for first-time puppy owners.
- The best training trick to use when training your puppy is by far the use of treats. Don’t be shy to use them but don’t go overboard with them either. Your dog will be more inclined to listen to you if you have treats. Don’t over do it though because your dog should listen to you because he or she respects you, not because you are giving him or her treats.
- When you catch your puppy chewing on something he or she isn’t supposed to be chewing, replace it with something they are allowed to chew. Your puppy is going through teething, which is a painful period for puppies, and chewing helps them. Your puppy doesn’t know what he or she can and can’t chew. If you see them chewing on a shoe, for example, replace the shoe with a chew tow immediately.
- Walking on the leash will take time for your puppy to get used to, and you will need some time getting used to holding the leash properly as well. Hold the leash so that it is slack enough for your puppy to move around and not feel any discomfort.
